Abi Clarke
In the past,
i.e. in the beginning of 2020, comedians may be envisioned spending several
years traveling around the UK as stand-ups before being invited to a TV panel
show and then selling the arena tour. It's not so easy at the moment. One form
of art that can be performed live in the future is comedy, however there will
soon be no arena shows. One Bristol comedian, however, has managed to find an
international audience during lockdown through social media. Abi Clarke never
set out to be an internet star. Abi, who is 24, lives in Henbury and started
making online videos "to establish a community of like-minded people who
could appreciate my standup comedy." "I was performing a lot of shows
in the depths of Devon to males older than 50 who weren't so enthusiastic about
my Love Island, Sims and Twilight references so I went online with the hopes to
meet other young women who really related to me." Abi has since been
performing at Lakota Gardens as lockdown restrictions have eased, but continues
to post her videos on Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok (where she has recently
hit 500k followers) Finding inspiration from sources such as her job at a café,
a conversation with a stranger or even the girl group chat. She writes every
thought down on her phone.
